Japanese Society of Child Health Nursing

Brief History of the JSCHN

As someone who has walked the path of pediatric nursing as a clinical nurse and as an educator, for a long time. I had been thinking to create a way for nurses to meet to share the joys of pediatric nursing. “Only nurses who have wrestled with child nursing can earnestly feel the joy of nursing children, can’t they?” These opening words of the establishment prospectus of the Japanese Society of Pediatric Nursing were written in 1991 by myself, who became an avid promoter and representative with coworkers who also had had the same thought for many years.

We developed the Society with coworkers who shared the joy of pediatric nursing. Coworkers include nurses, who care for children in hospitals and clinics; researchers, who conduct studies on pediatric nursing with the aim of promoting excellent nursing; and nursing educators, who teach the joys of pediatric nursing to nursing students. Thirteen promoters attended the first small meeting in August 1991, and in a ceremony at the meeting, I was elected as the first president.

In February of the following year, the first congress was held. I felt much excitement with my coworkers, all of whom had been looking forward to such a congress in pediatric nursing. The congress was an unforgettable experience for me. The first society newsletter was actually made by hand, the face of the president was a handwriting illustration, not a photograph.

Both the board of directors and councilors were vibrant with life even though we participated in them at our own expense, and we really enjoyed meeting together. I worked for six years as chairperson and left the post upon retirement from university. Later, the Japanese Society of Pediatric Nursing became the Japanese Child Health Care Nursing Society, and the position of chairperson was renamed as president.
